My Inspirations During My Trip to Sydney, Australia

 G'DAY!

If you follow us on Instagram or LinkedIn, you've already had a little peek into the trip I took "down under" last month. But I have been saving this blog for ALL of you who keep me writing to you every month.

I recently returned from a jam-packed business conference with my Business of Design (BOD) BOSS crew. It was a whirlwind of globetrotting, serious business chatter, indulging in delicious meals, and making valuable connections. These biannual gatherings fuel our businesses, where we swap knowledge, lend expertise, and act as each other's board of directors to drive growth. Those meetings are fundamental for the health of our businesses. And getting to do this in Australia was an opportunity of a lifetime.

We arrived a few days early to shake off the jet lag, and we balanced our work with some fun team activities before diving into the serious stuff. We also found inspiration everywhere in Sydney. Take a look…

1. The Natural Wonders: Beaches to the Mountains

THE BLUE MOUNTAINS

The name says it all. However, the mountains aren't blue but wrapped in the blue haze emanating from the eucalyptus trees. It was an incredibly unique sight; I don't believe the photos captured the magic. The views left me breathless.

BONDI BEACH TO THE COOGEE WALK

Another day, we took the 3.7-mile coastal walk along some of the most spectacular beaches. The natural tide pools set against the sandstone cliffs are stunning, all within the city limits. We ended with a rough seas snorkeling dive, which was terrifying and magical all at the same time.

2. The Built Environments: Architecture & Interiors

SYDNEY OPERA HOUSE

Let's start with the obvious—Sydney wouldn't be the same without the Sydney Opera House. A breathtaking architectural marvel, it captivated me with its intricate design and awe-inspiring presence. It's magnificent! The complexity of the form is so fascinating that I could have easily spent a week studying it. Composing simple materials like concrete, glass, and tile against the structure's complex form was inspiring and thought-provoking.

HOUSE TOUR

Jodie Carter, our host and designer from Australia, wowed us with a tour of her client's gorgeous home overlooking Sydney. Jodie is a seasoned published designer, and we were astounded by the beautiful details she incorporated into this home, like the curved stone kitchen island and TVs that did disappearing acts. Her client's artwork collection was fresh, engaging, and a visceral delight!

3. The Culinary Delights & Cocktail Hours

I think I ate my way through Sydney. The food and cocktails were incredible, and having designers in my company made every experience more delightful. Never mind the interiors of the restaurants like Fred's. These places were a feast for the eyes, too. Kingfish was one of the most unique foods I tried there; it is cured and served ceviche style. And so many cocktails that are served with a smokey cloche! Australians love to explore all sorts of ideas with food and drinks, and we were open to them all!

The BOD BOSS crew (missing a few) including our Business Of Design fearless leader Kimberley Seldon.

I am feeling inspired and rejuvenated as I write this. Travel, like this trip and my trip to Greece, has a way of relaxing you in a way that takes it all in - the design, the smells, the taste, and everything in between.

In the same way, a place that a client has visited often triggers a vibe or a feeling for a room, and we love to create spaces where clients can be surrounded by fond memories in their homes.
